Anthony William Robinson left a comment for AlexI started working with models in May of 2012. To date I have completed 74 shoots, with 49 different models. Its cost me a lot financially, but the experience and training I have had from it makes it worth every penny.
I had my first proper studio shoot about 2 months ago, and wow what a difference that made to my photography. I do still prefer outdoor locations, more natural and much easier to create different looks and styles just by taking a step to the left or right. But, working in a studio, wow....
I have now done 6 studio shoots, ranging from fashion, lingerie, implied nude, I did a twisted tea party and a sweet as candy themed shoots too. They were so much fun to do.
The models have security, and are warm and safe. The photographer, me, has more time to adjust and fine tune a pose. The results are much more consistent, with settings made, and basically just left at that. So it frees the mind up to be more creative.
I never had so much fun, its almost a shame to call it work.
Anyway, the reason for this blog post, to any and all photographers, if you can take a chance and get some proper studio time, then take it. Don't be misled by thinking that working in a spare room is a studio, get yourself into a good old, honest to goodness fully fledged studio. The difference it makes is outstanding. Try it, most studio owners are happy to spend a little time with you helping you with the lights, and again, once they are set up, its a simple enough job to just leave them at that, or try to have a play, move them around, point being. Do not be afraid of the studio. Get in there, and bring your photography to another level,
Good luck.

Comment by Kenny Partington on February 2, 2013 at 20:59 it really is a steep learning curve Tony as your finding out. Ive got three years of studio time under my belt and I'm still learning. Thats the beauty of light- it never quite works how you think it should and part of the fun is making it do what you want it to do. I have now, as you know, started higher level lighting training because of what happened last year and its been eye opening. The things you can do by shaping light is the most amazing thing. I'm really hoping that our chats about shooting in Bolton happen cos when you see Martin's studio, you'll go crazy for it.

Comment by Tony Smith on January 20, 2013 at 14:30 Thanks Fred. It certainly has been a massive learning curve. Even after being a photographer for over 15 years, it proves you can never stop learning.
On the strength of the shoots I have done so far, i have been published 8 times. 6 were actual magazines, printed and distributed, 2 were online magazines. With another one going to online publication in the next week or so.
The magazine that printed my work is called Kultur, and its based in South Africa, and they specialise in alternative music, culture, fashion etc.
They were so happy with my work, they actually made me their first official UK based photographer, which has given me such a confidence boost its unreal. I actually went through a short period where I lost faith in my work, and the standard of work I was producing, but I got over that and I believe, I have gone from strength to strength. Now that Kultur are taking my work on a regular basis, its become much easier to be happy with my work,
Plans for the future, well, I run an alternative model page on Facebook, which has kind of taken off big time, and I would love to get an actual magazine published using that as a basis. I do have other top secret plans for the page too, more on that through the year.
At the moment I have a couple of upcoming shoots, some merchandise for a punk band, and a vintage clothing company and I are in talks about shooting some stuff. Still very early days. I have a media company that I will be speaking to in the next few weeks too with regard to marketing my photography too.
2013 is going to be a busy year for me, got lots planned, but then I like to plan big knowing I can always trim something at a later date.
Exciting times ahead then, ha ha
